Reflecting on the 2024 ATA Product of the Year Awards
As a passionate toy and collectibles expert, I’ve attended numerous industry events over the years, each one offering a unique glimpse into the evolving world of play. While I regrettably couldn’t attend this year’s ATA Toy Fair in Melbourne, I’ve reflected on the winners and trends and shared a few thoughts and insights below.
The winners of the 2024 ATA Product of the Year Awards show the creativity and innovation that define our industry. From interactive pets to immersive games, each product represents a labour of love, carefully created to capture imaginations and inspire hours of play.
One trend that stood out to me is the continued rise of interactive and immersive experiences in toy design. Products like the Bitzee Interactive Pet by Spin Master and the Heroes of Goo Jit Zu Deep Goo Sea by Moose Toys blur the lines between physical and digital play, offering children dynamic and engaging experiences that transport them to new worlds of imagination. The Collectable Product of the Year category showcased the popularity of surprise collectibles, with the 5 Surprise Mega Gross Minis by ZURU. Captivating collectors and enthusiasts alike, the mystery and anticipation of this blind pack adds an extra layer of excitement to the collecting experience. Magic Mixies with their cute Mixie Plushies are sure to be a hit over the coming months as kids discover the magic hidden within each cauldron as they uncover surprise gems, create their own magical potions and collect the 6 Plushies.
Another notable trend is the growing emphasis on educational value and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) learning in toy development. LEGO® ICONS Concorde and LEGO® ICONS Wildflower Bouquet by The LEGO Group, were both winners in the Hobby and Craft & Activity categories. LEGO continue to show how they blend artistry with construction in an iconic and innovative way appealing to the many!
I have found myself becoming more and more fascinated by the board games category, and there’s no denying That Sound Game will be a popular choice amongst families and friends ready to make some noise and have heaps of fun.
Sustainability is also emerging as a key focus for many toy companies, with several winners incorporating eco-friendly materials and practices into their products. The Clixo Super Rainbow Pack by Divisible By Zero is a great example of this commitment to sustainability, demonstrating that playtime can be both eco-conscious and enjoyable.
